Butler, Vosen Lead Record Showing for SSA at
Southeastern Swim Championships
Record-setting performances from Drew Butler and Kyle Vosen sparked the Scottsboro Swim Association to its best-ever performance at the Southeastern Short Course Swim Championships held last weekend in Nashville.
With 129 points, Scottsboro finished in 23rs place out of the 65 teams represented, with Scottsboro the smallest city to finish that high in the standings. The Wet 'N' Wildcats squad was able to best programs from larger cities such as Prattville, Montgomery, Kingsport/Johnson City, Chattanooga, Decatur and Pensacola among others, many of whom failed to score.
The Wildcats' score also eclipsed their combined total from the previous three years.
Vosen, swimming in the Boys 10-Under age group, posted a dominating performance while scoring 81 points. Vosen medaled in 6 events, including 4th place finishes in the 100 Breast and 100 IM. Vosen also placed 5th in the 50 Breast, took 6th in the 50 Fly and 50 Free, and placed 8th in the 500 Free. Among Vosen's efforts were new team records in the 50 Free, 500 Free and 100 IM.
Butler scored 38 points and claimed 3 medals while swimming in the 11-12 Boys classification. Butler captured the 5th place medal in the 100 IM, breaking a 15 year-old team record in the process, and also placed 6th in the 50 Breast and 8th in the 50 Free. Butler also took down the old team marks in the 50 Breast and 50 Back.
Both Vosen and Butler also qualified to swim the maximum number of events at the Sectional Age Group Championships to be held in Charlotte, N.C. in two weeks.
Five other SSA swimmers also participated in individual races and turned in fine performances.
Zach Reichle, swimming at the bottom of the 13-14 Boys age group, was able to come away with 21st place in the 100 Breast, and set a new team record in the 200 Breast while placing 23rd. Reichle was among the top seven 13 year-olds in both events, and achieved a Sectional time in the 100 Breast.
A pair of Coopers joined Butler in the 11-12 age group. Crossan Cooper placed 30th in the 100 Breast, 51st in the 500 Free and 65th in the 200 IM. Cole Cooper placed 56th in the 100 Fly.
Scottsboro had two representatives in the Girls 10-Under classification. Kristin Copeland placed 51st in the 50 Breast and took 53rd in the 50 Free. Anna Richard came away with 52nd in the 50 Fly and 62nd in the 50 Free.
However, the 10-Under Girls notched Scottsboro's final 10 points when the team of Richard, Copeland, Elizabeth Rains and Ansleigh Hand swam up from their seed to take 12th in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
Mary Margaret Green and Shannon Bradbury had also qualified, but were unable to attend the meet.
