Wet ‘N’ Wildcats Prevail Over Cullman
Thursday night, the Rec*Com was host to a battle between
District 2 foes Cullman and Scottsboro.
A close battle was anticipated, as although Scottsboro took 2nd
place ahead of Cullman at last year’s District Meet, Cullman had edged the Cats
in an earlier dual meet. However,
Scottsboro won 9 of the first 10 races, and cruised to a surprisingly easy
victory, 442-228.
Nine Scottsboro swimmers swept three events- Kyle Vosen,
Drew Butler, Alexis Heaton, Mary Margaret Green, Amelia Adkins, Jeremiah
Keller, Michael Rossmeier, Matt Brewer and Haley Abril. The balanced performance from the Wildcats
featured a season-high 43 swimmers in the scoring column and 82 personal best
times.
The 8-Under Boys Medley and Freestyle Relay squad of Vosen,
Davis Bostrom, Logan Anderson and Curtis Cooper scored easy wins. Vosen swept the Short and Long Free as well
as the Fly for 15 pts.
Cullman’s 8-Under Girls provided the strongest competition
Scottsboro has faced this summer, and the two relay races were decided by a
fraction of a second, with Scottsboro’s squad of Kyla Reichle, Claire Megehee,
Maryann Jones and Kristin Copeland snagging the win in the Freestyle
Relay. Copeland (10 pts.) also won the
Breast and Fly. Jones (9 pts.) claimed
first in the IM, and Reichle (8 pts.) took first in the Short Free.
Meghee and Caroline Estes
each added a point, while Lilly Green, Erin Valentine,
Scottsboro’s 9-10 Girls were once again team high, scoring
the maximum possible 62 points despite the absence of several key
swimmers. The team of Mary Margaret
Green, Alexis Heaton, Shonna Browder and Anna Richard notched convincing wins
in the Medley and Freestyle Relays.
Green, who swept the Short
Free, Fly and Long Free, and Heaton, who placed first in the IM, Breast and
Back, each scored 15 points. Shonna
Browder’s trio of 2nd place finishes added 9 points. Richard, Elizabeth Rains and Jessica Duncan
each scored 3 points with 2nd place efforts. Emma Stewart, Amanda Albin and Carli Johnson
combined for 5 personal bests.
The 11-12 Boys were missing most of their heavy hitters,
but still managed 14 points, led by 11 from Zach Reichle, who won the
Breast. Parker Kerce (2 points) and
Clayton Stewart (1) were both in the scoring column for the first time.
An improving 11-12 Girls squad of Amelia Adkins, Karah
Kirkland, Emily Albin and Meghan Travis captured first in the Medley and
Freestyle Relays. Adkins (15 pts.) swept
the IM, Back and Long Free.
The 13-14 Boys relay squads of Jeremiah Keller, Phillip
Klepper, Craig Cleaver and Michael Rossmeier set new team records in winning
the Medley and Freestyle Relays, the latter a 25 year-old mark that has been in
their sights all season. Rossmeier swept
the Short Free, Breast and Long Free while Keller took first in the IM, Back
and Fly. Klepper (9 pts.) and Cleaver (6
pts.) left crumbs for the Cullman squad.
Kelsey Kokes helped pace the 13-14 Girls with 13 points,
including winning efforts in the IM and Back.
Shannon Bradbury also scored 13 points with victories in the Short Free
and Breast. MaKalea Kirkland (8 pts.)
took first in the Fly, and Christina Richard, Hailey Altonji and Ashley Baker
all had personal bests. Bradbury, Kokes,
Richard and
Scottsboro’s Senior Boys had a very strong showing, led by
Matt Brewer’s sweep of the IM, Fly and Long Free.
The Wildcats’ Senior Girls were paced by Haley Abril’s
sweep of the IM, Short Free and Fly.
Allison Bivens added 5 points with a victory in the Breast, and Mindy
Didier and Ashley Carter each chipped in a point.
